Union Pacific, perhaps the greatest railroad of all time, has always had a love affair with big locomotives. The legendary Challenger, Big Boy, and Gas Turbine all wore the Union Pacific name. But perhaps the most impressive UP monster was the largest diesel engine ever produced, the DD40AX "Centennial." UP thought there would be no better way of celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Golden Spike Ceremony at Promontory, Utah than by having EMD create the largest diesel locomotive ever built. 6,600hp and 32 cylinders of diesel power gave the DD40AX its incredible tractive effort. Essentially the combination of two GP40's, the DD40AX was over 98 feet long - so long that it had a transverse passage between the two diesel engines. Unfortunately, like other monster locomotives before it, the DD40AX was replaced by smaller but more flexible motive power - sadly ending the days of the monster locomotives. In the tradition of the MTH Premier line Challenger, Big Boy, and Turbine locomotives, MTH is proud to reintroduce the Premier line DD40AX newly equipped with Proto-Sound 2.0. With a total length just over 2 feet, the ¼ inch scale DD40AX is sure to be the monster of your own diesel fleet.
