The Post-war era for Lionel was a time of growth and innovation, as they replaced their original product line with less-colorful, but more realistic, trains. They started selling their first steam locomotives that could create smoke, produced by dropping a small tablet or special oil into the locomotive’s smokestack. The smokestack contained an electrical heating element, allowing toy trains to realistically imitate real steam engines. During this time, Lionel also diversified their product line by adding more toy train accessories, allowing toy train enthusiasts to create customized, unique sets.
