Falling behind in competition with General Motors and General Electric, ALCO hit the reset button and rolled out an entirely new line of locomotives in 1963. Dubbed the Century series, these locomotives featured an all new engine, traction control system, air system and multiple other features to offer more power and especially efficiency as touted by the salesmen. The C-420 was among the first of these models, with over 130 eventually being produced for railroads all across the country. Despite the promises and hopes of the builder, for the most part the Centuries failed to deliver the operating or sales returns they and the railroads had hoped for. Within 6 years, Alco would close its American production facilities. Despite setbacks, several C-420s remain in operation today and the line has endeared itself to generations of "Alco-holics." Lionel's latest release includes all of today's great LEGACY and Bluetooth control features and showcases many of the smaller regional and short line railroads which embraced the Alco models then and now.
